Two favorites, two key numbers, one ticket at +211. On history it's a fair price. Our numbers on both games are why we bet it.

It's a Boom Board Pick: a bet we actually placed, posted before kickoff and tracked on our picks page win or lose. Two legs, one unit, at DraftKings.

| Leg | Vegas | Our number | We took | |---|---|---|---| | Jaguars vs Eagles (Sunday 9:30am ET, London) | Jaguars −7.5 | Jaguars by 11 | Jaguars −6.5 | | Patriots vs Raiders (Sunday 1pm ET) | Patriots −3.5 | Patriots by 7.5 | Patriots −2.5 | | The parlay | | | +162, boosted to +211 |

Why we bought both lines down

More NFL games end with a margin of exactly 3 or exactly 7 than any other number. A favorite laying 7.5 loses the bet when it wins by a touchdown; a favorite laying 3.5 loses when it wins by a field goal. So we paid for a point on each: the Jaguars from −7.5 to −6.5, through 7, and the Patriots from −3.5 to −2.5, through 3.

Leg 1: Jaguars −6.5

Jacksonville is number 1 on our power rankings, which are built from every snap of the season. They're 3–1, with wins of 34–10, 35–6 and 22–17, and they have the third-ranked passing offense.

Vegas has them by 7.5. Our number on the game page says 11. And the Eagles are without two of their best players: DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley are both out.

One caution on our number: this game is in London, a neutral field, and our spread adds a couple of points of home field that Jacksonville won't really have. The true gap to Vegas is smaller than it looks.

Leg 2: Patriots −2.5

New England is 7th on our rankings, 6th in passing offense and 6th in pass defense, and beat Buffalo 29–26 last week. Vegas has them by 3.5; our number on the game page says 7.5.

The Raiders are 3–1, which is the case against this leg. But the play-by-play has them 26th overall, with the worst rushing offense in football. Our number says they've been winning games they were outplayed in.

The math

55%

a 7.5 favorite wins by 7+

56%

a 3.5 favorite wins by 3+

31%

both, on history

32%

needed at +211

  • Since 2010, favorites of about 7.5 have won by 7 or more 55% of the time (527 games). Favorites of about 3.5 have won by 3 or more 56% of the time (1,243 games).
  • Multiply them and the ticket hits about 31% of the time.
  • At +211 it needs 32%. So on history alone it's a hair under a fair price. At +162, without the boost, it would need 38% and we'd pass.

History treats these as two average favorites. We don't think they are: our numbers have both winning by more than Vegas does. That's the lean, and it's the reason for the bet. The boost was a 30% profit boost on a parlay; boosts differ by book and by state. What one is really worth: sportsbook promos explained.

Real talk

  • It loses about two times in three. Both favorites have to win, and by margin.
  • Our spread is a lean, not proof. Tested against Vegas over past seasons, our number has not beaten the line. When we disagree with Vegas, Vegas is usually the one that knows something.
  • The London game is the softer leg. Neutral field, an early kickoff, and Vegas already knows who the Eagles are missing.
  • One unit.
