Steelers vs Browns Prediction: Our Thursday Night Anti-Boom SGP (+563)

Every parlay this week is chasing a boom. This one bets there isn't one.

The game script#

• The total is 38.5, tied for the lowest on the Week 4 board (with Dolphins at Vikings). Vegas expects an ugly one. So do we.
• Our projected spread has Cleveland by 0.9. Vegas has Pittsburgh by 2.5. We think the Browns keep it close, and +3.5 means they can lose by three and we still cash that leg.
• Pittsburgh throws. The Steelers pass on 66% of their plays this season, second-most in the NFL (the league average is 57%). Fewer handoffs, fewer yards for Warren.

Leg by leg#

Browns +3.5 (−146). In games with totals this low, a two- or three-point favorite fails to cover +3.5 about 62% of the time. With our spread leaning Cleveland, we call it 61%. The book's price says 59%. A small edge.

Watson under 187.5 passing yards (−112). We project Watson for 162 passing yards. That makes the under about 66%. The book says 53%. This is the biggest gap on the ticket, and the leg the whole thing leans on most.

Warren under 67.5 rushing yards (−114). We project 61 rushing yards, so the under is about 64%. The book says 53%.

All three want the same game: slow, low and close. When one hits, the others usually come along.

The math#

• Our fair price: 61% × 65.5% × 63.5% = 25.4%, or +294.
• DraftKings, straight up: +375. Already better than our number: about 21 cents of value per dollar.
• The boost: DraftKings has a 50% same-game parlay profit boost on this game (three or more legs, +300 minimum, up to a $250 bet; check your DraftKings rewards). It turns +375 into +563, which only needs to hit 15.1% of the time. On our numbers, that's about 68 cents of value per dollar.

Full honesty#

The market thinks Watson's under is closer to a coin flip than we do. If the market's right, this parlay is about 20.5% to hit. Straight up at +375, that's roughly break-even. With the boost, it's still +36 cents per dollar. The boost is the edge either way. Our read on the legs only decides how big.

And yes: about three times out of four, this loses. That's the deal with a +563 ticket. We size it at one unit, and it stays on our record whatever happens.
